Identifying Engines
Engines can usually be identified by a machined pad located somewhere on the engine block. It's highly likely to be covered in grime so get the rags out before you begin and give the engine a good wipe down.
REMEMBER! left and right-hand refer to the left and right as if you were sat in the vehicle facing forward, not as if you looking at the engine from under the bonnet!
Vauxhall OHC Petrol Engines
On overhead cam petrol engines (OHC), the engine number is stamped on a pad on the right-hand rear of the cylinder block.
The first 2 numbers indicate the engine capacity.
18 = 1.8L OHC Petrol
23 = 2.3L OHC Petrol
Opel CIH Petrol Engines
On cam-in-head petrol engines (CIH), the engine number is stamped on an angled pad on the left-hand side of the engine.
GM Diesel Engines
On GM Diesel engines the number is stamped on a machined pad on the left-hand side of the cylinder block, below the fuel filters.
The first two numbers indicate the capacity.
20 = 2.0L GM Diesel
21 = 2.1L GM Diesel
23 = 2.3L GM Diesel
